Chitkul: Exploring India’s Last Village in Himachal Pradesh

We were on our road trip to Spiti Valley which was on our bucket list for a long time. We wanted to experience the beauty of Spiti Valley ourselves which we have only heard or seen in other videos. We have been doing travel vlogging for the last few years and in 2022 we covered Ladakh which was also on our bucket list.
If you are on the Spiti Valley trip then Chitul must be in your itinerary. The 40 KM stretch from Karcham to Chitkul will be the most adventurous and memorable drive of your life and if you are the driver then you are going to remember it forever. On the way, you can also visit Sangla Valley which is around 23 KM before Chitkul.
Introduction to Chitkul
Chitkul, often hailed as “The Last Village of India,” is located at an elevation of approximately 3,450 meters (11,318 feet) above sea level. This charming Himalayan village, which lies close to the Indo-Tibetan border, is the final inhabited community before the historic trade route to Tibet. It is the ideal sanctuary for people looking for peace and a connection to nature because of its distant position and quiet surroundings.
How to Reach Chitkul?
To reach Chitkul, most visitors opt for the scenic road trip from Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. The drive takes you through winding mountain roads, charming villages, and lush valleys. Though the journey can be a bit tiring, the breathtaking landscapes will keep you engaged throughout the trip.
Accommodation in Chitkul?
Chitkul offers a variety of accommodation options to suit all budgets, ranging from homestays to guesthouses, Tents, and lodges. Staying with the locals in traditional homes can be a memorable experience, allowing you to immerse yourself in their unique way of life. You can also choose the camps on the bank of the Baspa River with the amazing view of snow-covered mountains. The genuine warmth and hospitality of the people will leave an indelible mark on your heart.
We stayed in Tapri because it was late at night and didn’t want to travel more in our uncharted territories.😀 You can get a few homestays in Tapri after that Sangla Valley would be a good option to stay before Chitkul.

Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Chitkul is during the summer months from April to June and the autumn months from September to October. During these periods, the weather is pleasant, and the landscapes are vibrant with blooming flowers or colorful autumn foliage. We visited here in the month of May and there was a good amount of snow in the mountains. A few days after we left there was snowfall in Chitkul, so if you are lucky then you can experience live snowfall by yourselves.
